Certification removed

RSPCA Australia has announced that the ‘RSPCA Approved’ certification for farmed Atlantic salmon, of the JBS subsidiary Huon Aquaculture, has been withdrawn following an initial temporary suspension and subsequent investigation.

Dead fish

As reported by the Bob Brown Foundation, footage recorded in southern Tasmania at factory farms of Huon Aquaculture - a JBS subsidiary -showed live fish being dumped into crates alongside piles of dead salmon, where they were sealed and left to suffocate. Additional footage captured rotting chunks of salmon escaping from the farm structures and dispersing into surrounding waters.

Deceptive well-being

JBS has been the target of complaints filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly misleading investors about its animal welfare practices and its climate and environmental impacts. The complaint, filed by the Humane Society of the United States, alleges that although JBS and its subsidiary Pilgrim’s Pride claim to treat animals humanely, both source animals from factory farms where they are kept in cruel conditions and extreme confinement.

Pigs beaten with shovels

Pigs were beaten with shovels inside the slaughter facilities of Swift, a JBS Group company, in Worthington, Minnesota, according to PETA. The incidents were documented by U.S. federal agents on three separate occasions, and PETA has requested that the county prosecutor investigate the matter.

Beaten chickens

The Humane Society of the United States published an investigation documenting chickens being beaten and struck with iron bars at a farm and slaughterhouse contracted by Pilgrim’s Pride, a JBS-owned company based in the United States. Following the investigation, the organization filed animal cruelty complaints in the states of Texas and Georgia, where the abuse took place.

Shocks and beatings

Animals raised by JBS suppliers were dragged across the floor, branded on the face, subjected to electric shocks, and beaten unnecessarily, according to an investigation by Repórter Brasil. These practices violated the company’s own animal welfare policy, as disclosed in its annual report.
